About the Role
As a Respite Care Companion, you’ll work one-on-one with a child in their home, following a personalized plan of care. You’ll support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other medical or developmental needs — helping them thrive in a safe, nurturing environment.
What You’ll Do
Provide supportive, meaningful companionship to children with special needs
Encourage growth and independence through play, reading, and creative activities
Implement care plans as directed by the Respite Care Coordinator
Observe and document the child’s mood, behavior, and well-being, reporting updates to the supervisor
Communicate regularly with the care team and family members
Offer a calm, positive presence during times of loneliness, frustration, or change
Assist with daily living activities such as light housekeeping, meal prep, or personal care as needed
Ensure safety during all activities and report emergencies promptly
Record time, mileage, and visit notes accurately
Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent
At least 1 year of related experience (personal, volunteer, or professional) supporting individuals with special needs or providing companionship
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to read, write, and follow instructions in English
Access to a reliable vehicle with valid auto insurance
Current CPR certification
Clear criminal background check
Schedule Options
We’re hiring for several flexible roles with pre-screened families:
Weekly placements: Consistent families, weekday afternoons/evenings
Weekend shifts: Typically 4-hour shifts, one or two per day
Occasional care: Select open assignments through our My Jovie app
Typical hours:
Weekdays: 12 PM – 7 PM | Weekends: 10 AM – 7 PM
